Social Security Benefits

Upon death we will notify Social Security that the death has occurred.

Lump-Sum Death Payment

A one-time lump-sum death payment (LSDP) of $255 is paid in the following priority order (if applicable):

  1. A surviving spouse
  2. A child or children (minor or disabled adult)

If there is no surviving spouse or dependent child, there is no lump-sum death payment paid by social security.

Regarding Monthly Social Security Checks

The deceased must live through the entire month to be entitled to the check that arrives the following month. If the death occurs before the end of the month the check must be returned to social security.

Future Social Security Benefits

If there is no surviving spouse or dependent child/children monthly social security checks will stop. A surviving spouse will continue to receive a monthly check (their check or their spouse’s, whichever is larger). A dependent child/children will need to contact social security to set up their specific benefits.
