Dr. Alan Vella, DDS, a cherished husband, esteemed orthodontist, and devoted Christian, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on August 13, 2025, at Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River, NJ. Born on May 14, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY, Alan was a beacon of intelligence, handiness, and passion throughout his 93 years of life.
A Brooklyn native and proud resident of Richfield Park, NJ for over 40 years. He moved to Fort Lee, NJ where he lived for the past 52 year. Alan's early years were marked by a profound dedication to his studies. His pursuit of excellence led him to Seton Hall Dental School in South Orange, where he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1961. This accomplishment set the stage for his illustrious career in orthodontics. Alan furthered his specialization by obtaining an M.S. in Orthodontics from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his profession.
In 1965, Alan joined forces with his beloved wife, Dr. Mimi Vella, DDS, in her orthodontic practice in Parsippany, NJ. Together, they created a legacy of exceptional dental care, maintaining their practice for 36 years before retiring in 2003. Dr. Vella's professional affiliations were a reflection of his dedication to his field; he was an active member of the American Dental Association (ADA), the New Jersey Dental Association (NJDA), and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).
Alan's passion for life extended beyond his professional endeavors. He was an avid hunter, and his adventures took him from the plains of Africa on a thrilling hunting safari to a later tranquil photo safari. His time in the Army during the Korean War sparked a love for travel, which he joyously continued with his wife, exploring many countries and immersing themselves in diverse cultures.
Those who knew Alan would describe him as not only intelligent but also exceptionally handy, able to address and fix a myriad of challenges with a calm and thoughtful approach. His passion was evident in everything he undertook, whether it was in his meticulous orthodontic work, his adventurous travels, or his pursuit of various interests.
Alan was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Dr. Mimi Vella, DDS; his brother, James Vella Jr.; and his parents, James Sr. and Martha Vella.
