Annie Rowe passed away on August 15, 2025, at the age of 102 in Lyndhurst, NJ surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 8, 1923 in East London, Annie was the beloved daughter of Daniel and Annie (Mahoney) Mullins. Following World War II, Annie moved to New Jersey with her husband, Army Master Sergeant and lifelong Lyndhurst resident, Walter “Hawk” Rowe. Annie was predeceased by her loving husband;her daughter, Sheila; her sister, Sheila Johnson; and her son, John. Despite these profound losses, Annie’s spirit remained unbreakable. Her warmth, affection, and infectious sense of humor endured in the hearts of her surviving family, including her grandson, John, her granddaughter-in-law, Gosia, and her great-grandson, Daniel (named after Annie’s father). Annie also enjoyed the love and support of many nieces and nephews in the United Kingdom. Educated at Howrah House in Poplar, East London, Annie’s sharp intellect and curiosity were evident from a young age. Despite the extreme poverty she was born into, Annie won a full academic scholarship to the prestigious preparatory school and graduated at the age of 16. Annie considered herself blessed for knowing the Sisters of Faithful Companions of Jesus who nurtured her love of reading and learning. Annie’s commitment to education and community service continued throughout her life. In her adopted hometown of Lyndhurst, Annie served on the Lyndhurst Board of Education, Lyndhurst Library Board, and the Lyndhurst Academic Hall of Fame. Throughout the trials and triumphs of her long life, Annie embodied toughness, unwavering faith, and an adventurous spirit. Annie’s interests were well known to family and friends. She loved to travel, and was an avid readerand natural storyteller. Walking was not just a form of exercise, but a way to connect with the community. And, of course, drinking tea was her glorious obsession. As we bid farewell to Annie Rowe, we will do so with gratitude for the love, loyalty, and friendship that she bestowed upon us. She lived life with purpose and passion. Annie’s story is one of resilience, generosity, compassion, and a tremendous love of life. It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to this remarkable woman.
