Gerard Nicholas Castanteen

August 12, 1955 — June 19, 2025

Gerard Nicholas Castanteen, a devoted husband, father, and cherished member of his church, passed away on June 19, 2025, at the age of 69. Born on August 12, 1955, in Brooklyn, NY, Gerard's dedication to education led him to his work as a Paraprofessional at the Lyndhurst Middle School. He was known for his unwavering commitment to his family and students alike.

A proud member of the Gospel Light Baptist Church, Gerard's deep faith guided his daily life. The first gift he gave to his wife, Candida, during their courtship was a Spanish Bible, reflecting his passion for reading the scriptures and sharing the word of God with those he loved. He spent his life surrounded by literature, writing poems and short stories. His published works showcased his love for language and storytelling. He had an extensive library with a variety of literary works. Gerard found peace during the time he was spent in nature while freshwater fishing. He was an amazingly supportive partner, helping to raise their children while Candida focused on her career. His children gave him such pride and he found joy in his commitment to their upbringing.

Beloved husband of Candida (nee Giraldo) Castanteen. Loving father of Valerie and Oliver. Dear brother of Sharon and Janice Castanteen. Also survived by many extended family members and friends. He will be remembered for his massive smile, contagious laughter, and his brutally honest nature, which endeared him to friends, family, and colleagues alike.

A visitation will be held Thursday 9AM to 12PM at Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home, 425 Ridge Road., Lyndhurst. A funeral service will commence at 12PM. Gerard will then be laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery in Kearny.

As we gather to honor and celebrate Gerard's life, we invite all who knew and loved him to join us in remembering a truly remarkable man whose love and spirit will continue to inspire us.
