Jeanette "Jean" Mendola, 92, lived a life defined by love, resilience, and purpose. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she was the second youngest of five children in a large Italian-American family. From an early age, Jean exuded confidence, warmth, and a natural charisma. At Central High School, she was a cheerleader and voted by her classmates as "Best Dancer"-a glimpse into the way people would gravitate toward her throughout her life.
Jean met her future husband, Anthony "Tony" Mendola, who lived just a few blocks away. Their relationship developed while Tony was serving as a Marine, and together they built a beautiful life in Fairfield, where they raised two daughters, Susan Angelo and Michelle Taylor.
Known affectionately as "Jean," "Mima," "Madre," and sometimes, truthfully but lovingly, as "Mean Jean," she was the heart of countless family gatherings. She treasured her big backyard, often filled with wildlife and the occasional neighborly cat. A voracious reader, devoted crossword puzzle enthusiast, and avid tennis fan, Jean also found joy in quiet moments of reflection. Her words of wisdom, quick wit, and infectious laugh will continue to echo in the hearts of her family.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Tony Mendola; her parents, Dominick and Jemma (Picone) Darpino; and her siblings, Gloria Ferrara, Dominick Darpino, Claire Tulino, and Marino Darpino. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Susan Angelo and Michelle Taylor (Mark Taylor), and her cherished grandchildren: Jhett, Raeya, Michael, and Steven. She also leaves behind a close and loving extended family of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their children.
Jean lived a life of meaning, love, and quiet strength. Her legacy is one of devotion, joy, and authenticity.
In keeping with Jean's wishes, there will be a private burial.
