Listen to Obituary

John Joseph Matos, known affectionately as John to his loved ones, passed away on October 8, 2025, at the age of 64 after a courageous battle with cancer. John's journey was one characterized by creativity, love, and a remarkable sense of humor that left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

John's early life set the stage for a man who would become as multifaceted as he was talented. His pursuit of knowledge led him to college, where he studied engineering, a field that would underpin his later successes.

John's professional path was as diverse as his interests; from a fruitful 15-year tenure in the car industry, to his role as a private client banker at Chase, and then providing his technical expertise at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Perhaps his most unique professional accolade was his certification as a professional master diver-a testament to his adventurous spirit and love for the ocean.

Beyond the corporate world, John channeled his creative energy into music.

His role in the rock band "Joker" was more than a pastime-it was a passion. John's musical talent was undeniable, especially with a guitar in hand, although he was known to master any instrument he touched. This creative outlet brought joy not only to John but also to the many who heard him play.

John's interests were as vibrant as his personality. His love for diving took him to the depths of the seas, and his wanderlust led him on travels to far-flung destinations. On land, he was known for his affinity for classic American muscle cars and motorcycles, vehicles that mirrored his robust and free-spirited nature. Yet, John's true talent lay in his ability to craft the perfect dad joke, always timely and guaranteed to elicit laughter and groans in equal measure.

John's life was one of profound connection-his presence a source of comfort and joy to his family. He is survived by his father, Manuel; his beloved daughter, Briana; his cherished sister, Marcella, and her husband, Steve; his adored niece, Stephanie, and her daughter, Ella; and his loving partner, Andrea. He was preceded in death by his son, Cameron, who no doubt welcomed his father with open arms; as well as, his mother Grace & her husband George, and his nephew, Scott.

Friends and family will remember John as the epitome of creativity, loving kindness, and humor. He touched lives in a way that left a lasting impression, and his memory will continue to be celebrated by those fortunate enough to have known him. His spirit, ever spiritual and unconstrained by tradition, will live on in the hearts of the many people who loved him.

John Joseph Matos' life was a symphony of laughter, melody, and love- a life well-lived and a man deeply missed. His legacy will resonate through the stories shared, the music he made, and the love he gave.

Rest in peace, John; your tune will forever play in the background of the lives you've touched.
