John J. Russo, known affectionately to family and friends as Jay, passed away on May 3, 2026, in Emerson, New Jersey, at the age of 81.

He was born on May 31, 1944, in Jersey City, New Jersey, and carried the values of hard work, loyalty, and family throughout his life. Jay was the kind of man whose presence brought comfort and confidence to those around him. He was wise, kind, and funny, and he had a gift for making people feel welcome, whether he was sharing a story, offering advice, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation over some local Italian pastries.

Jay graduated from Henry Snyder High School in Jersey City and began working early in life, first in the family fruit market, where he made deliveries on his bicycle. That early experience reflected the dedication and determination that would define his life. He later became a member of the electricians union and served honorably in the Army National Guard out of Fort Dix, New Jersey. His service and work ethic were a source of pride, and he approached every responsibility with steady commitment.

Over the years, Jay built a long and varied career in hospitality and business. He managed The Plank House in Wayne, New Jersey, and The Moonraker in Paramus, New Jersey, and later opened Honey’s Luncheonette in Lodi, New Jersey. He also ran the coffee shop in Saddle Brook Hospital, the cafeteria at GAF Corporation in Wayne, the coffee shop in the Bergen County Courthouse, and laundromats in Emerson and Saddle Brook. In every place he worked, he was known for his reliability, his strong sense of fairness, and the easy way he connected with people from all walks of life.

Jay had a special interest in physical fitness, investments, and enjoyed keeping up with the world around him. He also appreciated the beauty of his collection of engravings, had a love for old cars, and especially loved dogs and birds. He was never far from a good conversation, and he could often be found debating politics or trying to solve world conflicts over coffee. Those who knew him best will remember his sharp mind, his humor, and the warmth that came through in everything he said and did.

He was predeceased by his mother, Rosina Moncelsi; his father, Anthony Russo; his brother, Dennis Russo; and his sister, Joyce Russo-Seidler. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Pinero; his son, Robert Russo; his sister, Michele Kelly; and his brother, Michael Russo. He is also lovingly remembered by an extensive family of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, and extended relatives who cherished him deeply.

Jay leaves behind a legacy of family devotion, resilience, and love. He will be remembered for the many roles he filled in life, for the people he helped along the way, and for the laughter and wisdom he shared so generously. His family and friends will forever hold close the memory of a man who lived with heart, spoke with honesty, and faced life with strength and good humor.
