Martino Rizzo, 86, of Fairfield, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025. He was exactly where he wanted to be, beside his devoted wife, Maria.
Born on November 2, 1938, in Calabria, Italy, Martino brought with him a rich heritage, a love of tradition, and a deep devotion to family when he came to the United States. He was the beloved husband of Liberata Maria Rizzo, cherished father of Francesco Rizzo and his wife Marisa, and proud Nonno to his treasured grandchildren Nicole, Frankie, and Michael. Martino’s heart extended far beyond his immediate family, as he joyfully embraced many “bonus grandchildren” from the Van Houten, Silva, and Marangi families, each of whom he loved as his own. He is also lovingly remembered by his dear nephews Tony, Daniel, and Marco, his devoted sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, and his many cousins with whom he shared countless joyous moments, especially while dancing the tarantella.
Martino dedicated his career to hard work and service, spending many years as an Environmental Services worker at The New York Times and later at St. Barnabas Hospital, where his reliability and warmth touched countless lives.
At home, Martino’s passions reflected his Calabrian roots—he delighted in making capicola, soppressata, and homemade tomato sauce, sharing both his recipes and his love through food. His sense of humor and playful spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him, whether through his silly dance moves or the uniquely endearing way he expressed himself in English.
Above all, Martino was a devoted Nonno. He played an essential role in the lives of his grandchildren, from being a constant presence in their childhood to patiently (or impatiently) teaching them how to drive. His legacy is one of laughter, love, tradition, and family.
Martino will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the joy of knowing him.
