Sandra A. Valvano, known affectionately as Sandy to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, in New York City after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 10, 1941, in Champaign, Illinois, Sandy's vibrant spirit and kind heart touched the lives of all who knew her.
Sandy grew up in a loving home in Illinois before she found her calling in the arts and attended the New York School of Interior Design. Her creativity and eye for beauty were evident in her work and her personal life. After completing her education, Sandy dedicated over twenty years of service to the Lyndhurst Library, where her warm smile and helpful nature became a staple in the community. She was also an active member of the Lyndhurst Garden Club, sharing her love for nature and contributing to the beautification of her adopted town.
Sandy's spiritual nature was the compass by which she lived her life. She was a beacon of light and source of wisdom to her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with her. Her passion for gardening and reading reflected her introspective and inquisitive nature, allowing her to cultivate beauty in both her inner and outer worlds.
Loving would be an understatement when describing Sandy. Her kindness was as perennial as the plants she tended to in her garden, and her friendly demeanor ensured no one was a stranger for long. Sandy's legacy is carried on by her beloved family. Though predeceased by her cherished husband, Anthony Valvano, her love story continues through her devoted children, Anthony Valvano and his wife Jeannie, and Vickie Valvano-McGee and her husband Marty McGee. Her grandchildren, Meghan, Anthony, Brandon, Kelley, and Kayla, will forever cherish the wisdom and affection she imparted upon them. Sandy's sister, Donna Mikulka and sister -in law Mary Lou Mullins, will miss her deeply, as will her adored canine companion, Jolie.
In her life, Sandy embodied the words of Helen Keller: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart." These words were a testament to the life she led, one filled with love, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the things she held dear.
Sandy's journey through life was one of purpose and joy. Her presence was a gift to those who experienced her love and friendship. As her physical presence is missed, the memories and the impact she made will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she has left behind. Sandra A. Valvano's story is not one of sorrow, but a celebration of a life well-lived and a soul that will forever be cherished.
