Saverio Mangiola

Saverio Mangiola - lovingly known as "Sammy" to many - passed away peacefully at home on September 14, 2026, at the age of 91, surrounded by his loving family.

Saverio was born in Melito Porto Salvo, Italy, and came to America at the young age of 19 in pursuit of the American Dream. A dedicated and hardworking man, he proudly worked as a Longshoreman with Local 1235 for 35 years. Throughout his life, Saverio's greatest pride and joy was caring for and providing for his family.

He cherished spending time with his grandchildren, tending to his garden, and playing cards at the Spilingese Social Club. He also looked forward to meeting daily with his dear friends, sharing laughter, stories, and good times. His warmth, humor, generosity, and love for those around him will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Saverio is survived by his beloved wife, Antonia Barritta; his three daughters, Josephine Castro, Caterina Mangiola-Gaetano, and Giovanna Mangiola-Maimone; and his five cherished grandchildren, Leonardo, Alessandro, Veronica, Sofia, and Maya.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he loved and the many lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made in Saverio's memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 259 Oliver Street, Newark, NJ 07105.
